1963 Match Reports

Mason’s 61 top score for Wigston (14.9.1963)

Wigston were put in to bat on a fast drying wicket and the Clarence Sports skipper’s decision appeared well justified when Wigston lost their fourth wicket with only nine runs on the board.

A contrast in styles during a stand between Malcolm Moore and Roy Mason resulted in 38 runs being added before Malcolm Moore was caught for a very correct and patient 11.
Roy Mason profiting from an early let off, drove and pulled powerfully to reach Wigston’s top individual score of the season – 61.
David Hill too, was very aggressive and a series of lofted drives produced 21 runs in 11 minutes.
Wigston bowlers were very much in command when Clarence Sports batted. Wickets fell at regular intervals until an eighth wicket stand produced 40 hard hit runs.
The spin bowling of Richard Carter however quickly restored the situation and with Derek Young taking the last wicket with his first ball, Wigston were home by 27 runs.

Wigston lose by eight wickets (22.9.1963)

Wigston collapsed before the off-spin of Matthews who exploited the favourable conditions cleverly. Malcolm Moore and Ivan Clowes batted well and Geoff Dunkley and Keith Pyne helped the score along with some bright hitting. The remaining batsmen were rather disappointing, failing to cope with the turning ball.

Carlton Hayes made short work of knocking off the runs against some rather loose bowling on a wicket that had now dried out and was playing more easily.
