Victory in first Senior League match (30.4.83)
Wigston scored a maximum 20 points from an away victory over Heather Sparkenhoe in their first Senior League match.
Bob Riley and Paul Dunkley gave Town a sound start with Riley hitting a fine 48, including three sixes. Three wickets had fallen with little addition to the scoreline, but a very good innings from Howard Riley again put Town in a commanding position. Riley, who was only one short of his half-century when dismissed, had struck four sixes and four four fours. Town’s innings closed at 141-9, which was a formidable total considering the state of the outfield, due mainly to the adverse weather during the week.
Heather’s batsmen had no real answer to Town’s opening pace attack of Rich Mason and Dave Weedon and they found runs difficult to come by. Mason took four wickets in an 11 over spell – his fourth resulting from an excellent catch by Bev Horne. New player Tim Wood also bowled really well, capturing four wickets in his seven overs.
